Everything great has to start somewhere... Wanna learn more about Mike Clattenburg?
The Pilot
In 1998, show creator Mike Clattenburg made a low budget but highly popular 72 minuet film titled "Trailer Park Boys" featuring two trailer park misfits, Ricky and Julian. The two posed an animal hit men with cocaine habits and a phat corvette. The story was pretty simple, yet downright funny following their day to day life and problems with women, money, and shooting cats and dogs. This movie was shown at the 1999 Atlantic File Festival to high praises where a producer by the name of Barrie Dunn saw it and instantly fell in love. Barrie had a vision for a "groundbreaking" television show based off of the characters and ideas. Barrie got together with Mike, Robb Wells (Ricky), and John Paul Tremblay (Julian) and they talked it over and came up with a plan for 13 hour long episodes. The November
of 1999 was filled with excitement and a trip to Toronto to pitch the idea to television networks, but was turned to disappointment when they were turned down. This only added fuel to the fire for the boy wanting to get this project off the ground.
Enter Showcase
Someone had the idea to cold call showcase, and present the idea. There were rumors that Showcase was looking at obtaining some original productions, and the execs were excited when presented with the idea. Showcase sent Dunn and Clattenburg back to their home of Halifax with instructions to find a producer with more experience. It was this request that brought Michael Volpe into the picture, and the Trailer Park Boys had found a station to call home. Showcase ordered 6 half hour shows, and season one was underway!
Shot from the cameraman's point of view, the program became something of a rarity in English Canada... a homegrown phenomenon.
The boys have sense toured with Our Lay Peace and Guns N' Roses. The Trailer Park Boys have also appeared in music videos with The Tragically Hip and havebeen presenters at numerous award shows... always in character. Several famous
artists have appeared in the show over the years including Alex Lifeson from Rush, singer Rita MacNeil, and Skidrow's frontman, Sebastian Bach. Trailer Park Boys is Showcase's highest rated Canadian series. Thanks to the chance Showcase took on Barrie Dunn and Mike Clattenburg, the Trailer Park Boys have gone down in underground television history with a huge world-wide fanbase, and a feature film "The Big Dirty" produced
by Ivan Reitman. (yeah, the dude that made Ghostbusters!)
